GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is hosting a food drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to distribute food bags and host a potluck for about 100 unpaid TSA and air traffic control agents during the government shutdown+ local donations provided the supplies.  WWMT
  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said that starting Saturday, 1.4-million eligible Michiganders will receive partial SNAP benefits at 50% of the normal amount following a court order due to the federal government shutdown; the payments will appear on debit cards November 8th for those who normally receive them on the third, fifth, or seventh of the month—officials said.  WKZO
  • The Kalamazoo County board approved winners for its first Community Grant program last night — $400,000 was divided among local projects — and winners must report back on their progress in a year.  WKZO
  • A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery on November 11 regardless of the federal government shutdown, with a flyover at 11 a.m. Colonel Frank Walker said the community provided the stage, loudspeakers and chairs needed for the event.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from Michigan State University found that one in six pregnant Michiganders uses cannabis to ease symptoms like morning sickness, insomnia, and anxiety. Health experts warn that using cannabis may cause harm — such as preterm labor and low birth weight — and advise women to talk with their doctor about safer options.  WWMT

  • Marshawn Kneeland, a former Western Michigan football player and Dallas Cowboys draft pick, died at 24 on November 6 and no cause of death has been given by NFL sources.  WWMT
