BUSINESS NEWS

  • The new Raising Cane's chicken restaurant in Portage will open in January 2026 after breaking ground in June—spokespersons did not give a reason for the delay and News Channel 3 is seeking more details from the property management company.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 1.4 million Michigan households will lose SNAP benefits starting Saturday as the government shutdown pauses federal funding. Representative Scholten and food bank leaders asked the USDA to use its contingency fund to keep meals coming for families who rely on the program (about 13% of households).  WWMT
  • Lansing is moving forward with plans to use 50 mobile housing pods (purchased this summer for $600,000 from Kalamazoo nonprofit Housing Resources Incorporated) to provide temporary housing for the homeless. Portage will see a new shelter open in December at the former Country Inn and Suites Hotel on East Kilgore Service Road.  WKZO
