ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Three blasts of energy will hit Earth tonight (after sunset) into Friday, sparking a geomagnetic storm that may produce northern lights in Michigan. The forecast shows a K-index of 6 (lower Michigan typically needs 7) so viewers should check the skies for this rare display. WWMT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ WMU Department of Public Safety is teaming with Kalamazoo-area law enforcement for an active shooter drill at Knauss Hall from Oct.15 to Oct.17 — no live ammunition is used. The exercise uses simulated scenarios to improve coordination among first responders — the building remains offline to avoid disrupting campus operations. WWMT
- ➤ Crews have shifted southbound U.S. 131 traffic onto a new bridge as a $24M project nears completion—lane closures ran from 7 p.m. Oct. 15 until 3 p.m. today, and crews will soon remove the temporary lanes while KL Avenue stays closed for upgrades until June 2026. MLive

- ➤ People with United Insurance might be out-of-network in January if they use Bronson Healthcare in Kalamazoo. Bronson Healthcare's chief revenue officer said they are negotiating with United to reach a new deal for about 30,000 patients. WKZO
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ After its longtime ice home closed last September, the Kalamazoo Curling Club lost its ice for the 2025/26 season and is planning a new 16,000 sq ft facility in Parchment though it remains $3 million short and membership dropped from 150 to 50. The club joined local ice groups for a feasibility study—expected to finish by December or January—to help solve the community-wide ice shortage. MLive
