ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers across West Michigan are facing a tough fall harvest because a dry summer has stressed crops and damaged equipment—one combine even caught fire due to dust-clogged bearings, and experts say irrigation can only supplement rain.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan’s House and Senate approved a $51.8-billion omnibus budget this morning, which funds free school meals, long-term road repairs, and a 24% tax on cannabis—while the school aid package still awaits a Senate vote to complete an $80-billion plan.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo Metro transit has asked voters in Portage and surrounding areas to approve a new 1.1 mill urban millage for 2026—2030 that would raise taxes by $20 per year for a $200,000 home. The added funds will help cover rising bus costs and declining state revenue while maintaining fixed-route and on-demand services.  MLive
  • Governor Whitmer said free breakfast and lunch for all public school students continued—legislative leaders expect the fiscal year budget to pass soon as a bipartisan school aid bill funds the program, according to a letter from the governor and school superintendent Michael Rice.  WKZO
  • Food banks braced for a surge in people needing help after a government shutdown threatened federal workers’ jobs; Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes said families faced uncertainty over how long the shutdown would last—prompting the pantry to stretch donations and purchase more food supplies.  WWMT

  • WMU hockey celebrated its first national championship by unveiling custom, gold-plated rings at a ceremony on Wednesday at Heritage Hall on campus — each ring is personalized with a player’s name, record, and team motto.
