CULTURE NEWS

  • Portage native Ryan March is filming an alien invasion thriller titled 'The Crawling' on a remote 30-acre farm in Jackson County and at an undisclosed site in Kalamazoo—employing local Farmers Alley Theatre actors in supporting roles— as he returns home from Hollywood. The movie, featuring custom-made costumes by Hollywood legend Steve Wang, will finish filming the first week of September and is set for release in 2026.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WMU trustees approved a $702 increase in tuition that raises the rate from $15,252 to $15,954 for the upcoming academic year—this change marks a 4.6% jump and means tuition is now 3.5 times higher than in 2001.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gull Meadow Farms built a 6-acre corn maze on Gull Road to honor WMU hockey’s national title win in April—rows of corn show the words WMU and National Champs with hockey sticks and a puck. The design was mapped by a Utah company and set up using manual planting methods.  MLive
