COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Raul Galvan has been named the new executive director of the Southwest Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross in Kalamazoo and will lead disaster response, blood drives, lifesaving training and support for military families across eight counties + he began his career at the chapter in 2015.  WKZO

CRIME NEWS

  • A 25-year-old man was critically injured after an unknown suspect fired multiple rounds from a vehicle during a drive-by shooting in Decatur Township late Thursday night—he was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries while investigators collected evidence.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan lawmakers have little over one month to reach an agreement on the state budget after missing the July 1 deadline — if they do not act by Sept 30, a government shutdown will begin on Oct 1, risking funding cuts for schools and local nonprofits.  WWMT
  • The city of Portage is accepting contractor bids to build a permanent open-air farmers market — the project will replace the current market behind City Hall and will be built on a parcel between the Portage Zhang Senior Center and Comerica Bank.  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan launched MI Options on Friday, Aug. 22 to help residents navigate long-term care by connecting them with certified counselors who advise on Medicare, home care options and prescription cost matters. Residents and caregivers can call 1-800-803-7174 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday to schedule appointments — the free service aims to reduce confusion over healthcare decisions.  MLive
