CRIME NEWS

  • Myquan Rogers was sentenced for the 2022 shooting that killed Western Michigan University student Naya Reynolds and her unborn baby—his sentencing began at 8:30 a.m. Monday after repeated delays due to his changing legal representation.  WWMT
  • A former WMU exchange student, Allan De Los Santos Mueses, 40, will stand trial on four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly assaulting a fellow student in his apartment in 2010—Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said he was extradited from Miami and a trial date is yet to be scheduled.  WWMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Michigan State University study finds that Michigan needs $998 million in EV chargers to support the rising number of electric vehicles. The study estimates 66,602 new chargers, with most placed in urban areas—some in rural locations—to allow drivers safe long trips.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tonight, the Kalamazoo County board will vote on special support programs funded by the housing millage to help homeowners, the homeless, and those recovering from substance abuse — including a project to subsidize 48 housing units for developmentally developed residents in Portage. The ad hoc committee picked these four proposals after reviewing about $973,000 in requests and will consider construction applications next month.  WKZO

  • Portage Northern will unveil a new look this fall — the team will use a new system with young talent to stand out against their opponents. Coach Kurt Twichell says the Huskies will work hard to prove they are daringly different.  MLive
