ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wildlife photographer Thomas Gerndt spotted a group of juvenile white pelicans near Empire Beach as the sun set over Lake Michigan and returned the next morning to see them still there—showing the birds are becoming more common. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said the pelicans have been nesting along state shorelines for 15 years and are expected to keep expanding their range. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Drivers in Portage are urged to find an alternate route as the eastbound lanes on West Centre Avenue near Shaver Road remain closed until Friday for a gas main repair by Consumers Energy. Traffic will merge into one lane using the center left turn lane and the westbound curb lane on East Centre Avenue is also closed—significant delays are expected. WKZO
- ➤ The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office has faced staff shortages with 27 long-vacant jail positions and expanded bonuses+ a new County Bounty incentive to attract corrections deputies, cooks, and clerks. County leaders approved these interim measures and will later review overall compensation. WKZO
- ➤ Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is leading a coalition of 21 states that is asking Congress to pass a law to stop ICE agents from hiding their identity during arrests. Michigan senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin back the VISIBLE Act — which would require agents to show badges and names — as a measure to boost public safety and trust. WWMT
