Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 5th of July.
Good morning, Portage.
🏘️ Community
Sumo, a nine-week-old puppy at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, is available for adoption during Fourth of July weekend.
He is fixed and vaccinated and stands out for his mix of traits (his look is mini golden despite siblings appearing as Pomeranians), according to SPCA executive director Katie Timber.
🌲 Environment
A short but intense storm on the 4th of July weekend hit Portage, damaging homes in the Austin Lake neighborhood and causing 145,000 Consumers Energy customers to lose power (300 repair crews may restore most service by weekend's end).
🏥 Health
Over 400 runners competed in Kathy's Run for Cancer in Richland on July 4, raising funds for West Michigan Cancer Center + Bronson Cancer Center and Gull Lake High School scholarships.
The run was renamed to honor Kathy Kollig, diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer three years ago.
