COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portage property owners and renters whose homes were damaged by the tornadoes on May 7th, 2024 may now apply for financial relief—applications require supporting documents and a disaster case manager will contact eligible applicants within five business days. Relief awards will depend on available funds, the number of applications, and damage severity.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy reached the halfway point on its 12-mile project to replace old cast iron pipelines with plastic pipes—improving safety and reducing methane emissions for more than 2,000 homes and businesses in Kalamazoo County near Portage. The work began in February and will finish in October.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two road projects in Portage began on Tuesday, June 17—one on West Milham Avenue and one on Shaver Road—that shifted lanes and created closures for construction work. Traffic on West Milham Avenue from 12th Street to Oakland Drive was moved to the south side while a rolling lane closure on Shaver Road from Oak Street to Vanderbilt Avenue is set to finish by June 20 and work on Milham Avenue is expected to complete in August—motorists were advised to use alternate routes.  WWMT
