CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday, a man described as unhoused unboxed a BB gun he had just purchased from Dunham's Sports inside the local Taco Bell on S. Westnedge and Mall Drive in Portage, prompting the restaurant manager to move customers for safety while police responded and removed him.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Third grade class sizes in the Kalamazoo area range from 17 to 29 students, and in Portage Public Schools they range from 18 to 26 with an average of 21.8 students—nearly 82% of classrooms have over 20 students. State leaders plan to cap K-3 classes at 20 by 2031 to improve student outcomes.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents at a Kalamazoo County trailer park said they did not hear tornado sirens during the May 2024 tornado, leaving them unprepared despite available cell and TV alerts. In response, Comstock Township is considering installing 10 new sirens (estimated at $300,000) to provide an extra way to warn its residents.  MLive
  • The City of Portage will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for Oakland Commons and Creekside Commons, two affordable housing projects built by Allen Edwin Homes. The projects will add 104 housing units on a 12.6-acre site at 9581 Oakland Drive + 20% of the units are set for workforce housing + the development represents an investment of over $35 million.  WKZO

  • Portage native NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar is set to race at Michigan International Speedway after a collision with Ricky Stenhouse at Nashville Superspeedway led competitors to warn of future payback — Stenhouse is known to pursue retaliation following past incidents. Hocevar, who has earned strong finishes and drawn mixed reactions this season, said he addressed the matter with Stenhouse in a productive call.  MLive
