COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twelve Baskets Food Pantry in Portage opened its newly renovated community store Saturday, June 7 with new and used essentials priced as low as $1—proceeds support the food bank that helps about 350 families. The store will operate on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • News Channel 3 celebrated its 75th anniversary at the 41st annual Do-Dah Parade on June 7th — the parade featured a 'Once Upon a Time' theme that focused on storytelling.  WWMT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Gardeners in Portage now see soil warming (in the high-50s to low-60s in the morning) that makes it a good time to plant many vegetable seeds. Experts say warmer weather later this week will help crops like green beans, cucumbers, and zucchinis sprout quickly (sometimes in as little as five days).  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Stewart Friesen won Saturday's Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway after a late restart crash caused a 12-vehicle pileup and three overtimes. Portage native Carson Hocevar nearly won before a flat tire and restart violation pushed him to finish 11th.  MLive
  • Chase Briscoe earned the pole at Michigan International Speedway by clocking 195.514 mph on June 7 — the fastest qualifying lap since 2018 and his third consecutive pole for the FireKeepers Casino 400 Cup Series race, which starts at 2 p.m. today on Prime Video. Three Michigan-born drivers, including Portage’s Carson Hocevar, will compete in the race.  MLive
