- ➤ The pool's opening is postponed because lifeguard training is not finished and officials have not given a new opening date—locals are disappointed and must find other ways to stay cool as summer begins. WWMT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A Day To Remember will join forces with Yellowcard — along with The Wonder Years and Dinosaur Pile-Up — on a 36-city North American tour that will stop at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, November 4. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Portage Public Schools broke ground on the new Woodland Elementary School at 1401 Woodland Drive on June 2 as part of a $175 million bond project, with dozens of students in blue Woodland Welcome shirts. The $24.7 million school will feature a sunken living room+fun ramp for sliding, cozy nooks+water feature and learning commons, while demolition of the old building takes place this summer. MLive
- ➤ Senior Landon Harter of Gull Lake High School developed an AI tool called KODISC that helps teachers create short educational videos—he has already received inquiries from companies and will continue to refine the tool as he prepares to study computer science at the University of Michigan next year. He was inspired by a popular YouTuber who uses animations to explain math and science. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ WMU announced that famed basketball star Manny Newsome (a record-breaking Bronco and Hall of Famer) passed away on May 24. He set many scoring records and became the first African American administrator at WMU (earning a retired jersey and a lasting legacy). MLive
