ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Drivers across Michigan pay an average of $4.84 per gallon (an increase of 11¢ from last week and $1.65 more than last year). Prices vary by region, with Jackson reporting $4.92 and Marquette $4.49. WKZO
- ➤ Inflation is pressuring West Michigan households, and residents are turning to side hustles to earn extra cash. In Plainwell (where a local carpenter launched a custom planter business), others are boosting income with dog-sitting and community garage sales. WWMT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Kalamazoo County board will vote tonight on a $467,000 grant proposal to keep operating a homeless shelter for people with health issues near Western Michigan University. The grant would maintain the facility for up to 18 months while teams secure Medicaid reimbursements (using funds from the housing millage). WKZO
- ➤ County officials said jail water issues are due to corroded plumbing even though the main supply remains safe (bottled water is in use). New tests will run in late May or early June to evaluate the filtration systems. WKZO
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Life EMS Ambulance in Kalamazoo County will launch a new program in early to mid-July that lets paramedics give blood transfusions on scene. Training begins in June on a six‐hour session, and the service uses low titer O‐positive blood in a temperature‐controlled cooler (swapped weekly with hospital partners). MLive

- ➤ Kalamazoo-area girls' track stars, including teams from Constantine & Kalamazoo Hackett, qualified for state finals later this month after earning 40 individual regional titles at recent meets. They now prepare to compete at the finals. MLive
