COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Portage opened a new 1-mile trail for biking and walking on May 5, costing $1.1 million and featuring asphalt and a boardwalk section in a wetland area — the trail connects with other local routes and the city will hold a free ribbon cutting ceremony with refreshments and a shuttle to parking today. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local community members visited Portage Central Elementary School on May 14 to bid farewell to the 56-year-old building. The school (built in 1969) will be demolished this summer and a new educational facility (designed for modern learning) will be built next door. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Rising Loy Norrix lineman Jakari Lipsey received his first Division-I offer from Iowa State after a breakout season in which he recorded no sacks and 56 tackles while helping the Knights post their first winning record since 1998—he also excelled in track by winning the shot put at the Don Lukens Invitational and setting a personal record in discus ahead of the Division-I regional meet at Portage Central.
