EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Several international students at WMU had their visas questioned in early April when their records were removed from SEVIS—DHS later restored their valid status but a terminated record still appears and may cause future travel or work issues. Attorneys say DHS must fix the record gap by May 13 to protect the students’ status. WWMT
- ➤ Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine will host the SimWars Competition next Wednesday in the Simulation Center at W.E. Upjohn MD Campus in downtown Kalamazoo. Eleven teams from across the state will test their emergency skills from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., with a final contest between the top two teams after lunch. WKZO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, West Milham Avenue between 12th Street and Oakland Drive will be under construction in Portage. The project will replace ADA sidewalks and ramps, repair curbs, extend the city’s fiber network from Oakland Drive to Angling Road, mill and resurface the road, and replace traffic signals at Monticello Avenue and Devon Street—with traffic shifted to the north lane—and work is expected to be finished by August weather permitting. - ➤ Representative Brian BeGole introduced a House bill that would let police use an oral swab test to detect drugs like THC, cocaine, heroin, and Benzodiazepines in drivers. The bipartisan proposal, which gives results in five minutes, may soon be considered to help improve road safety in Michigan. WWMT
