  • The historic Hayloft Theatre Barn in Portage will reopen on Thursday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. as part of a barn dance at Celery Flats park — free barbecue dinner, square dancing, and a dedication ceremony honoring donors are planned.  MLive
  • Nearly two months after the March tornadoes in Union City, rebuilding has begun as federal loans from the SBA now help residents and businesses repair damage while neighbors join in clearing debris and restoring homes.   • The Pastors on Patrol program celebrates 10 years as Kalamazoo Public Safety pairs with local clergy to calm tense situations—helping reduce violence and build stronger community ties.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Eagle Creek Renewable Energy agreed to pay $25M to the state after a 2019 sediment spill at Morrow Dam affected the Kalamazoo River. The settlement dropped all environmental claims and will fund restoration projects for the river (a vital local resource).  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Portage residents cleaning up after recent floods are advised to use repellent and wear protective clothing as state health officials warn of ticks and mosquitoes breeding in floodwaters. Officials urge removing standing water (a key risk factor) to help prevent diseases like Lyme and West Nile.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Portage Northern junior Natalia Icaza-Mastache was voted Kalamazoo’s top junior athlete after posting five home runs + 21 RBI during a strong spring season. She edged out Bangor’s Jaret McCoy with 5,585 votes while overcoming a significant leg injury from her freshman year.  MLive
  • Michigan football added four-star offensive tackle Jakari Lipsey from Loy Norrix to its 2027 recruiting class on Friday, making him the top in-state commitment (ranked No. 3 statewide) as coach Jim Harding builds his offensive line.  MLive
