  • On Sunday, May 4, the Portage Farmers Market will open its 10th season at Portage City Hall at 7900 South Westnedge Avenue; the market will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature live music by local musician Mike Talbot, a visit from mascot Mr. Crispy, over 30 vendors offering local goods, and the Youth Advisory Committee's 17th Annual Green-A-Thon giving away tree seedlings.  WKZO
  • Portage will host a one-year anniversary event for the May 7 tornado at Celery Flats Pavilion on May 7 at 5:30 p.m.—elected officials and community groups will offer remarks, a moment of reflection, and a tree seedling giveaway to mark the recovery efforts.  WKZO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A sheriff’s SUV flipped three times after a dark hatchback left its lane on East Michigan near 28th Street in Comstock Township on April 26 — both drivers were taken to the hospital and appeared to be okay.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • Christopher Vandenburg — a 31-year-old from Kalamazoo with outstanding warrants — was arrested in Richland Township after he stole a vehicle just before 2 a.m. and evaded officers by driving through a fence and colliding with two police cruisers during a U-turn along M-89 before being caught on foot with deputies also finding stolen mail in his vehicle.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage city council heard residents' complaints that a sewer installation project in Ramona Park turned lawns into muddy ponds with gravel used instead of proper topsoil. Homeowners have been charged up to $25,000 for hookups + Mayor Patricia Randall promised a personal tour and swift action during the busy construction season.  WKZO

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Portage City Council approved a multi-million dollar project to build 42 affordable homes on a four-acre lot near Stanley Avenue and Woodbine Avenue, called Stanwood Crossings. Construction on the first 12 homes will begin in June and the project will be completed in three and a half years—meeting local needs.  WWMT
