ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • M-96 was closed on Tuesday morning between 38th Street and G Avenue due to downed powerlines from strong winds, leaving 344 Consumers Energy customers without power + officials expected restoration later Wednesday.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Loy Norrix student Charisma Edwards received a $40k scholarship from College Board's BigFuture program Tuesday in Kalamazoo in front of family, classmates, and administrators, joining over 30,000 nationwide who earned the award since 2019.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Strong winds on Monday knocked out power for over 83,000 customers, leaving about 46,000 still without power Tuesday as Consumers Energy crews work in Calhoun & Kalamazoo counties to restore service by midnight.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction to extend the primary runway at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport started Monday with a $14 million FAA grant, and work will continue through this fall; the new 450 ft extension will give pilots additional safety margins for flights.  WKZO
  • On Tuesday, April 28, Gov. Whitmer signed a bill to name a section of US-131 between I-94 and Parkview Avenue after fallen Kalamazoo airman Master Sergeant Gregory T. Kuhse, honoring his service in Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.  WWMT

  • Voters can cast ballots to choose Michigan Division 1-2’s best corner infielder as the poll runs until Tuesday, May 5, and local candidate Austin Keene (Portage Northern) is among the featured players from across the state.  MLive
