  • Today is Arbor Day and Portage Youth Advisory Council is hosting a Greenathon & tree planting at City Hall while seedlings will be given away at the Farmers Market opening on May 4, following Kalamazoo’s tree planting in Bronson Park to honor the 56th city commission.  WKZO

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Today, April 25, 2026, Michigan anglers begin trout, walleye and northern pike season statewide. The Department of Natural Resources has introduced an interactive map (accessible on the DNR app) to help check local fishing rules and guide safe practices in high water conditions.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tigers suffered a 9-8 loss to the Reds after blowing a five-run lead in a rain-delayed game that ended with a walk-off hit (Kenley Jansen nearly earned his seventh save). The teams will meet twice this weekend.  MLive
  • Portage Central sophomore Cam Noe earned a scholarship offer from University of Michigan Thursday night after a breakout season that brought him nine Division-I offers. He gained 1,803 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, earning Associated Press first-team all-state honors (helping lead the Mustangs to the state semifinals).  MLive
  • Today the Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon weekend kicks off with free events at Bronson Park — upcoming races start tomorrow morning, and several Portage streets including South Street and Stryker Way will face closures through Sunday to ease runner and walker routes.  MLive
  • Michigan high school girls track and field rankings released from April 23 competitions show results across events; Portage Northern’s Mauriel Seeberger finished fourth in the 100m + ninth in the 400m, and updated listings will appear weekly.  MLive
  • Cassidy Parmelee of Mattawan has broken records this season with 51 total goals while drawing Division-I interest and helping her team to a 6-3-1 start. The senior was named Athlete of the Week after receiving nearly 37 percent of the community's votes.  MLive
