- ➤ Two Michigan veterans received military burials Thursday morning at Fort Custer National Cemetery near Battle Creek. Members of the American Legion Post 298 Riders and local students honored Marine Sergeant Norman Bouwens and Navy Electricians Mate Todd McCan (the ceremony featured rifle volleys, live taps and flag folding). - ➤ Verizon services were disrupted in Kalamazoo County (including Portage) on Thursday from 10 a.m. due to a cut fiber, and engineers expected a fix by 10:06 p.m. WWMT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Voters in Kalamazoo County, including Portage, will decide on renewing a 1.5 mill special education tax on May 5 to generate $16.8 million over six years (supporting federally mandated services) and to help avoid cuts in other school programs. MLive

- ➤ Portage readers can vote to decide the best Michigan Division 1 high school baseball pitcher for 2026. The poll closes Thursday, April 30 (11:59 p.m. Eastern) and features candidates from local high schools and across the state. MLive
