ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ruby-throated hummingbirds began their spring migration into Michigan over the weekend, with sightings in Galien and Bridgman, Trenton, Livonia, and Hudsonville reported by April 21. Hummingbird Central shows that these tiny birds can fly up to 23 miles a day and use tail winds to conserve energy + build weight for their long journey. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Three WMU international students along with others from Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin filed a lawsuit against the federal government for ending their SEVIS status. The suit names the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Immigration Enforcement because officials said the terminations were due to criminal records checks or VISA issues—this includes a man from India, a man from Nepal and a woman from China who is pregnant and married to a U.S. citizen. - ➤ City Manager Pat McGinnis presented a balanced budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year starting July 1 that keeps taxes the same and maintains core services. The city council will hold a City Hall work session on April 29 at 2 p.m. — with a follow-up session on May 13 at 2 p.m. if needed — that is open to the public. WKZO

- ➤ Jordyn Bonnema, Kalamazoo Christian’s all-time leading scorer in three sports, committed on Monday to join Grand Valley State University’s women’s basketball team—joining local stars on the roster after the Lakers won their first Division-II national championship since 2006.
