CRIME NEWS
- ➤ After WMU's national championship win on April 14, 2025, students celebrated by burning couches along Lafayette Avenue — nearly 30 officers and 3 fire engines responded to extinguish the fires and clean up debris as neighbors voiced concern over safety. WWMT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo College President Jorge G. Gonzalez, who began his leadership in 2016, announced he will retire mid-2026—after his tenure, the Board of Trustees will start a national search for his replacement. WWMT
- ➤ Starting next school year Portage Public Schools will include a lesson on pornography in the sixth grade human growth and development course that covers healthy relationships and online safety—approved by the school board on February 10th after parent feedback. This change was made because officials say increased access to technology has made early education on these topics more urgent. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today at 6 p.m.—the Portage City Council will vote to allocate $450,000 to the non-profit 'After the Storm' for tornado recovery and set aside an extra $150,000 to restore trees on city property. They will also review City Manager Pat McGinnis’ City Budget Proposal and consider plans to distribute a $1-million recovery fund to local businesses by May. WKZO
- ➤ The City of Portage will hold its third Portage Road 360 Community Open House on Wednesday from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Portage Zhang Senior Center as officials gather public input to improve the corridor from East Osterhout Avenue to East Centre Avenue. WKZO

- ➤ Portage Northern senior Gregory Patrick committed to Notre Dame on Sunday via social media—he is Michigan's No.2-ranked prospect for the Class of 2026 who narrowed his options from nine football programs to four earlier this spring. His decision marks a key moment in his recruiting process as he finalizes his future in college football. MLive
