ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rising tensions in the Middle East drove up oil prices on Monday, Mar. 2, impacting local gas prices. GasBuddy analysts predict that the national average will reach $3 per gallon later this week — affecting drivers' daily commutes.  WWMT
  • Triple-A Michigan reported today that the state’s average gas price rose 14¢ to $2.99, with Kalamazoo County prices at $3.01 (local rates range from $2.83 in Marquette to $3.10 in Ann Arbor).  WKZO
  • Jonas Peterson will step down as CEO of Southwest Michigan First on March 26 — he will take on a new leadership role in April while President Carla Sones serves as interim CEO during the search for his successor in Kalamazoo.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Michigan University hired two elders in residence to help Native American students feel less isolated. The workshop program—funded by a $14,000 grant—will begin in March and offer cultural support and guidance to students and local community members.  MLive
  • GVSU received $1,031,000 in federal funds (announced Monday) to launch the West Michigan Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Consortium, which will drive ethical AI research and student training in local tech. The funding covers hardware, software, licensing, and cloud services.  WWMT

SPORTS NEWS

  • A new study by local ice groups shows that planned closures of Wings Event Center and Lawson Ice Arena will cut access by four sheets, spurring proposals for an ice complex and curling facility.
