- ➤ The original owner of Antique Kitchen is set to reopen the restaurant with its staff after an unexpected closure on Jan. 25, with renovations underway and a planned reopening on Sunday, Mar. 1 on South Westnedge Avenue where it has served locals since 1971. WKZO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Western Michigan University has renamed its $110M dorm to Valley Oaks. The residence hall, under construction for 1,016 first-year students, will open this fall (the new name honors local legacy and reflects nearby red oak trees). MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Portage residents have begun receiving new trash and recycling carts as the city prepares to switch to a single-hauler waste system next month; households in Zone A will get their carts the week of Feb. 16 while current Waste Management customers continue using their existing containers. WWMT
- ➤ WMU's Board of Trustees on Thursday voted to issue a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that lets the university begin talks with Kalamazoo County to transfer day-to-day management of Asylum Lake Preserve; if finalized, the county will assume stewardship while WMU continues its research and educational use. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Flu season is affecting Portage schools as Moorsbridge Elementary closed Thursday — deep cleaning is planned and parents are urged to vaccinate children — and the school will reopen Monday. WWMT
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Two homes in Portage's affordable neighborhood have gone under contract, showing local real estate activity is picking up. Listing agents will share more pricing details soon. WWMT
- ➤ The Oshtemo Township Planning Commission will review a revised 48-acre development plan tonight on West Main Street. The Ferlito Group proposal includes a Kroger, a gas station, restaurants, a coffee shop + apartments and 329 single-family homes in lieu of duplexes. WKZO
