COMMUNITY NEWS

  • God’s Kitchen of Michigan will celebrate its 15th anniversary and launch a $15-million capital campaign at a free MLK Jr. Soul Food Dinner on Monday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Kanley Memorial Chapel on WMU’s campus to expand its services by buying property and a commercial kitchen.  WKZO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, Michigan Auto Law identified roundabouts in Kalamazoo and Portage as dangerous using 2024 crash data, with one Kalamazoo roundabout recording 49 collisions and 15 injuries — urging drivers to exercise extra caution.  WWMT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Signage went up for Dollar Tree at 1950 W. Centre Ave as the store takes shape in the former Rite Aid space, with work underway as of Jan. 12 but no opening date announced. The discount chain plans to expand at other closed Rite Aid locations across the state.  MLive
  • Raising Cane's will open its Portage location on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The restaurant broke ground in June 2025—after a delayed January opening—and will be its fifth Michigan spot.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • EGLE allocated $9 million in grants to 19 airports, including West Michigan sites, for PFAS testing, monitoring + cleanup. Funding will support equipment cleaning and gear replacement at airports such as Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International and Battle Creek Executive.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County and WMU announced Friday they are exploring a plan to transfer management of Asylum Lake Preserve (274 acres at Drake Road and Parkview Ave) to ensure permanent protection for recreation and research. Both boards will review the proposal in February amid local concerns over a nearby rezoning request.  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents face more snow and dropping temperatures, with up to 10 inches expected and wind chills near 25 below zero through Monday, so warming shelters are open including Portage District Library (300 Library Lane) and Portage Zhang Senior Center (203 East Centre Avenue) in Portage plus other sites in Kalamazoo.  WKZO
